Urban Challenge 2009
The final event of the Urban Challenge 2009 resulted in a strong winning proposal on the potential of organic waste recycling in the slums of Cape Town, South Africa. The winning team won a field visit to South Africa. The team consists of Merel van den Heuvel (University of Amsterdam), Liana Boogaars (Van Hall Larenstein), Jan van Waaij (Hogeschool Utrecht) and Dorien van den Berg and Phindile Mangwana of the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. During the field visit – from April 23 to May 2 – the students elaborated on their proposal.

The final event of the Urban Challenge 2009 produced some beautiful proposals on Solid Waste Management in the district Philippi in Cape Town, South Africa. Around this topic Cordaid, together with its South African partner organization CORC (Community Organization Resource Center), formulated a challenging case for students. Seven teams with students from nine Dutch colleges/universities and three South African universities have finally submitted a proposal within the challenge.
It was an exciting final event in which the students clarified their proposals. The South African students followed the presentations and awards ceremony by webcam. The jury consisted of Stefano Marmorato of CORC, Dr. Peter Erkelens of TU Eindhoven, Titus Swartjes World of Wide Recycling and Astrid de Jong of Cordaid. Stefano Marmorato of CORC formulated his response to the winning proposal as follows: “…. Must complete and stimulating and I would like to work with this proposal.
