Knowledge Institutes

Due to the fact that knowledge and educational institutes gather valuable information through research, trainings, workshops etc., they also serve as important sparring partners for the various partners involved. This sharpens thinking by questioning our work and views, and bringing new trends and insights.

Knowledge Institutes

Knowledge Institutes are important participants in Urban Matters, because they have specific know-how and expertise on relevant subjects, varying from urban development, to more specific subjects such as affordable transport, introduction of bicycles and making GIS (Geographical Information System) data available.

Besides this valuable contribution of know-how and expertise, other roles they fulfil in Urban Matters are support in research on diverse themes by (international) students, sharing studies and executing process mappings.

Educational Institutions

Educational Institutions contribute to Urban Matters, through research by their students, but also by conscientisation with regard to urban issues, and the approach of Urban Matters.

To promote cooperation with colleges and universities, and engage students in Urban Matters, Cordaid presents the Urban Challenge. It is a contest for Dutch and South African students, based on a real life case, providing a unique learning experience. Participating students directly help to improve the lives of people in the slums.

Another way Educational Institutions participate in Urban Matters is through cooperation with Cordaid and local partners in the development of minors related to urban issues.

In cooperation with Cordaid The Hague University of applied sciences has developed a minor ‘social housing in global perspective’ for students building and civil engineering. Starting point is that students will not just acquire knowledge on social housing problems in a global perspective, but that they will work within projects of Cordaid partners for their internship or thesis.
